A proposed form of Free Speech Memorial was reduced to one simple gesture in the space of Mysia street. All the other decisions were rigidly subdued to this main idea. As a starting point in designing process and inspiration at the same time served a physical representation of censored documents full of thick black strips obscuring unwanted content . This inspiration was translated into architectural form resembling black stripe cutting in two the surface of the square – a symbolical Strip of Censorship. This element can be perceived as an abstract urban sculpture as well as narrative line telling the story of polish democrating resistance during the communistic times and especially the fight for freedom of speech.

At one of its ends located in front of the ex-Ministry of Censorship a black strip goes up revealing concealed, erased information. A semi covered space created in a consequence – Memorial – is meant to be a place of reflection but devoid of pathos – You won’t find here names of the fighters for the freedom of speech or quotations from famous poems. The internal surface of the Memorial is finished in polished polymeric concrete stained in black. Directly beneath this curved shape a little triangle-like space was designed – its slightly different material makes it distinctive from the rest of the stone pavement of the square.
